Lahore (Web Desk): A senior Al-Qaeda leader, Amin ul Haq, a close aide of Al-Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden, was arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Punjab, the department said on Friday.
In a statement, DIG CTD Usman Akram Gonadal said that Amin ul Haq was arrested during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) from the Sarai Alamgir town of the Gujrat district of Punjab.
He added that a legal case had been registered against Haq, who was planning sabotage targeting important installations in the province.
“Amin ul Haq was a close associate of Osama bin Laden since 1996 and was involved in many terrorist activities,” the statement said, adding that Haq’s name was included in the United Nations’ list of global terrorists.
As per the UN Security Council's website, Amin ul Haq, who was born in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province in 1960, was designated as a terrorist on January 25, 2001.
The CTD further said that apprehension of Amin ul Haq is an important development in the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in Pakistan and around the world.
