Pakistan issues demarche to US over 'factually incorrect' Kashmir remarks by American ambassador to India 

Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan on Wednesday summoned the US charge d’affaires in Islamabad and formally conveyed a “strong demarche” over “factually incorrect remarks” made by the US ambassador to India concerning the status of Jammu and Kashmir during his visit to the disputed territory.

In a statement, the Foreign Office (FO) said that Pakistan had firmly rejected and condemned the description of Jammu and Kashmir as a “part of India”.

“It was underscored that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognised disputed territory, awaiting final disposition in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people,” the FO said in a statement.

The FO further maintained that the US envoy’s “irresponsible statement” was inconsistent with Washington’s established position on the Kashmir dispute and contradicted its stated commitment to international law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

“The US side was urged to ensure that its public statements remained consistent with the disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir,” the FO concluded.

Pakistan also recalled its appreciation for US President Donald Trump’s repeated offer to facilitate dialogue between Pakistan and India over the Kashmir dispute following Marka-e-Haq.

Trump has offered to help mediate the Kashmir dispute between the two nuclear-armed neighbours since his first term in office. In 2019, he told reporters that he was prepared to intervene in the matter, while stressing that any such move would depend on the consent of the leaders of Pakistan and India.

In 2025, after Marka-e-Haq, the US State Department again referred to Trump’s mediation offer, stating that each step he takes “is made to solve generational differences between countries”.
