3.4 magnitude earthquake felt in Karachi, surrounding areas

Karachi (Web Desk): A light earthquake of magnitude 3.4 was felt in Karachi and nearby areas on Saturday, as confirmed by the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

Officials said the seismic activity originated around 24 kilometres northwest of the Malir locality, with the tremor recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the surface. Fortunately, no reports of injuries or damage to property were received immediately after the incident.

This marks the third earthquake recorded in the country within a span of 24 hours.

Earlier in the day, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, and its effects were felt across several parts of Pakistan. The tremors were experienced in Islamabad and Peshawar, along with various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Residents in Swat, Hangu, North Waziristan, and Chitral also reported feeling the shaking, while people in Rawalpindi likewise sensed the seismic activity.

According to the seismological authorities, the earthquake in Afghanistan had a depth of 199 kilometres, with its epicentre located in the Hindu Kush mountain range.
