Pakistan extends condolences over devastating floods in Ethiopia

Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan conveyed its heartfelt sympathies to Ethiopia in the wake of devastating floods and landslides that have impacted several regions of the country.

Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this calamity, and we appreciate the relentless efforts of the Ethiopian authorities in assisting those in distress.”

He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the Ethiopian people and expressed Islamabad’s readiness to provide help in any necessary form.

According to reports, a landslide struck Laka Kebele in Gacha Baba Woreda, claiming the lives of several individuals who were present in the area.

Authorities in Ethiopia have also announced a three-day period of national mourning following a separate landslide in the Gamo Zone of the Southern Ethiopia Regional State.

According to international media, at least 125 people have died in the floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the Gamo Zone.

The official death toll, first reported at just over 30, rose sharply within 24 hours, and numerous people remain missing.

Most fatalities occurred in elevated areas where prolonged rainfall had saturated slopes, causing them to collapse.

The town of Arba Minch and its neighboring areas endured two days of continuous heavy rain, resulting in significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and farmland.

Mudslides have blocked major roads, and several bridges have been submerged, heightening concerns of further incidents.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable regions to stay vigilant as additional flooding and landslides remain a serious possibility.
