Pakistan, India exchange captured soldiers in goodwill gesture

Lahore (Web Desk): Pakistan and India carried out a mutual exchange of detained border personnel on Wednesday, offering a rare sign of cooperation amid ongoing tensions.

Pakistan returned a Border Security Force (BSF) constable to Indian authorities, while India reciprocated by handing over a Pakistan Rangers official.

The Indian constable, identified as Purnam Kumar, had been held by Pakistani forces since April 23, 2025, after he inadvertently strayed across the border in the Ganda Singh Wala/Ferozepur region. 
Around the same time, Indian forces detained Muhammadullah, a member of the Punjab Rangers, who had similarly crossed into Indian territory without intent.

The handover was the result of a series of flag meetings between border officials from both countries, leading to the successful repatriation of the personnel earlier in the day.

In an official statement, the Border Security Force confirmed the safe return of Purnam Kumar and acknowledged the cooperation extended by the Pakistan Rangers.

Indian authorities welcomed the move, noting it as a constructive gesture during a period of heightened strain.

The development comes in a time when relations between the two countries remain tense, with their borders largely sealed and official dialogue at a standstill following intermittent skirmishes.

Against this backdrop, the coordinated return of the two officials is being viewed as a rare yet meaningful moment of understanding between the neighbouring forces.
