'Shahenshah-e-Ghazal' Mehdi Hassan remembered on death anniversary

Karachi (Web Desk): The 14th death anniversary of legendary ghazal singer Mehdi Hassan Khan is being observed today (Saturday) with music lovers, cultural circles and media organizations remembering his extraordinary contributions to the world of music and paying tribute to his enduring legacy.

Known across South Asia as the “Shahenshah-e-Ghazal,” Mehdi Hassan Khan was born on July 18, 1927, in India. Gifted with a unique voice and exceptional musical talent, he later emerged as one of the most celebrated and influential ghazal performers of all time.

Mehdi Hassan’s career took a significant turn in 1957 when he was given an opportunity to perform on Radio Pakistan.

He began as a Thumri singer and gradually earned widespread acclaim, eventually becoming a towering figure in the ghazal genre whose artistry captivated audiences throughout the subcontinent, according to media reports.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mehdi Hassan produced countless memorable songs that continue to be cherished by listeners of all ages.

In recognition of his outstanding services to music and culture, the legendary singer was honoured with some of Pakistan’s most prestigious civilian awards, including the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and Pride of Performance.

Mehdi Hassan’s remarkable voice also featured in more than 300 films, further strengthening a musical legacy that remains unmatched and continues to inspire generations of singers and music enthusiasts.
