Gmail web version gets smart feature for automatic email summaries

California (Web Desk): Google has introduced a powerful new feature in the web version of Gmail, designed to help users quickly understand lengthy email threads through automatic AI-generated summaries.

This feature was first rolled out in May 2025 for iOS and Android versions of the Gmail app. Now, the company has officially brought it to the desktop (web) version as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance user productivity using artificial intelligence.

With this update, users will no longer need to click on a "Summarize this email" button to view the key points in long conversations. Instead, Gmail will now automatically display a summary at the top of extended email threads.

The feature is powered by Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, which intelligently scans through lengthy conversations and extracts the most relevant and important details. The summary will continue to update automatically as new messages are added to the thread, ensuring users always have the most current information at a glance.

This AI-driven enhancement follows Google’s broader integration of smart features across its Workspace apps, including Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Gmail, where Gemini has already been helping users create, organize, and summarize content.

The new feature is expected to be a game-changer for professionals and teams who deal with a high volume of emails and need quick access to the essence of conversations without reading every message.
