'Echoes of a pop icon': Nazia Hassan remembered on 25th death anniversary

Karachi (Web Desk): The 25th anniversary of the passing of legendary pop singer Nazia Hassan is being remembered today, marking a quarter century since the untimely loss of a voice that reshaped South Asian music forever.

Born on April 3, 1965, in Karachi, Nazia Hassan rose to fame at just 15 years old with her electrifying performance of “Aap Jaisa Koi” in the Indian film Qurbani, a track that not only became a sensation but also introduced disco to the subcontinent.

Her breakthrough was followed by the release of her debut album Disco Deewane in 1981, which became a global phenomenon.

The record shattered sales records across Asia and charted in 14 different countries, becoming the highest-selling Asian pop album of its time.

Alongside her brother Zohaib Hassan, Nazia continued to pioneer a new sound through the 1980s, blending vibrant rhythms with pop melodies that resonated with audiences across Pakistan, India, and beyond.

Her appeal reached international heights with the release of her English track “Dreamer Deewane,” which entered the British music charts—a historic moment that made her the first Pakistani artist to achieve this milestone.

Her musical journey earned her both critical and popular acclaim, including the prestigious Filmfare Award at the age of 15, making her the youngest recipient in the award’s history.

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, she was also awarded the Pride of Performance by the Government of Pakistan, the country’s highest civilian honor. Yet, Nazia’s talents extended far beyond the stage and studio.

She was a qualified lawyer, a devoted social activist, and served as a cultural ambassador for UNICEF, dedicating herself to philanthropic efforts throughout her life.

Nazia Hassan passed away on August 13, 2000, in London after a prolonged battle with cancer. She was just 35.

Despite her brief life, her influence remains deeply woven into the fabric of South Asian pop music. Today, fans and admirers around the world pay tribute to an artist whose voice, vision, and legacy continue to inspire generations.
