Baku (Web Desk/Agencies): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday joined the global leaders as they gathered here to participate in the opening plenary “World
Leaders’ Climate Action Summit” of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
On arrival at the summit venue, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev welcomed the prime minister.
Later, he also posed for a group photo along with the participating leaders at the venue which followed the opening of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit.
The prime minister will host Climate Finance Roundtable Conference, which will be attended by multiple global leaders.
PM Shehbaz arrived in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on Monday night to attend the World Leaders' Climate Action Summit at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
Upon his arrival at Baku’s airport, the premier was warmly welcomed by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defence Industry, Vugar Valeh Oglu Mustafayev.
PM Shehbaz is accompanied by several key officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, Tariq Fatemi.
During the visit, the prime minister will represent Pakistan at the climate summit and advocate for stronger global action on the severe climate challenges facing Pakistan.
On November 13, he will address the World Leaders' Climate Action Summit, where he is expected to emphasize the urgent need for global climate commitments that lead to tangible, measurable outcomes.
In addition to his speech, the premier will participate in a series of high-level events on the sidelines of the summit, as well as hold bilateral meetings with leaders from around the world.
Pakistan will also play an active role at COP29, with several high-profile events and roundtable discussions planned at the Pakistan Pavilion, showcasing the country’s climate priorities. One key event he will attend is “Glaciers 2025: Action for Glaciers,” hosted by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon.
PM Shehbaz will also take part in the high-level event “Delivering Early Warning for All and Addressing Extreme Heat,” organized by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, which focuses on the global threat of rising temperatures.
The prime minister’s schedule also includes a dinner hosted by the President of Azerbaijan in honour of world leaders attending the summit.
After his arrival in Baku, the premier wrote on X, “Just landed in Baku, a city that beautifully bridges cultures and continents—symbolizing the unity we need to overcome our shared climate challenges.”
He said that at COP29, Pakistan would present its climate priorities, calling for commitments that bring real and measurable impact.
“Let’s turn words into action,” PM Shehbaz said.
