Pakistan to become 90% clean energy country in power generation by 2034: Leghari

Islamabad (Web Desk): Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has said Pakistan will become a 90% clean energy country in terms of power generation by 2034.

Speaking in the National Assembly in response to a Calling Attention Notice by Sharmila Faruqui, he said that in 2024-25, more than half—55%—of the country’s power came from clean energy.

He added that under Pakistan’s international obligations, the nation must reach a 60% share of clean energy by 2030, and expressed confidence that this goal will be achieved within the year.

On the matter of Prosumer Regulations, which aim to replace the existing net metering system with net billing, Leghari said the plan has been paused following concerns raised by various stakeholders.

A review petition will be submitted to the regulator under the direction of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The minister stressed that the changes would not place an additional burden on ordinary citizens. He explained that only 8 to 10% of the total solar capacity is connected to net metering, and the adjustment of profit margins from 50% to 37% is not intended to disadvantage the public.

Leghari also highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen the power sector, noting a reduction of circular debt by Rs780 billion and savings of Rs190 billion due to decreased electricity theft.

The House was further informed that the rollout of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters across Pakistan is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Power Division Aamir Talal Khan said during Question Hour that load-shedding is targeted at feeders experiencing high losses.

He added that the deployment of Aerial Bundled Cables (ABC) and AMI meters will help reduce these losses.

Khan also noted that authorities are actively pursuing those involved in power theft as part of a nationwide campaign.
