Ashgabat (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged the world community to play its role in ensuring that Afghanistan lives up to its international “obligations” and takes action against militant groups operating from its territory.
He was addressing the international forum marking the "International Year of Peace and Trust 2025," the "International Day of Neutrality," and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality in Ashgabat.
The event was attended event attended by leaders from countries including Russia, Türkiye and Iran.
Speaking about the rising “scourge” of terrorism, the prime minister urged global powers to step in.
“We need the international community to urge the Afghan Taliban regime to fulfil its international obligations and commitments and rein in terrorists operating from its territory,” he said.
PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude to Qatar, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for their “efforts” in helping mediate a ceasefire between Islamabad and Kabul.
Although the ceasefire remains in place, he acknowledged that it is still “fragile.”
Reaffirming Pakistan’s belief in resolving conflicts through dialogue, PM Shehbaz reminded the audience of Pakistan’s support for the Gaza peace plan.
He pointed to the “UN Security Council’s (UNSC) adoption of UNSC resolution 2788 earlier this year” as a clear endorsement of Pakistan’s approach to peaceful dispute resolution.
The prime minister said he hoped that “ongoing peace efforts will ultimately protect and save the lives of innocent Palestinians, ensuring a lasting and permanent ceasefire, allow the flow of critical humanitarian aid and help in the reconstruction of Gaza.”
He reiterated that Pakistan would continue backing efforts that safeguard “the inalienable right to self-defence for the Palestinian people as well as the brave and resilient Kashmiri people.”
PM Shehbaz stressed that genuine, long-term peace is deeply tied to sustainable development. He referred to the 2030 Agenda as a shared global vision for a better, more stable future. He added that “socio-economic development and the welfare of our people” remain top priorities for his government.
He told world leaders that Pakistan is making “significant strides” in promoting financial inclusion and bringing women and marginalised groups into the economic fold.
Turning to climate concerns, the premier said Pakistan is firmly committed to adopting environmentally responsible policies and has become a “global example in ecosystem restoration.”
Yet he also noted that, like many developing nations, Pakistan’s push for sustainable growth is being hindered by climate-driven disasters and inequities in the global economic system.
Recalling the “catastrophic impact” of the recent floods, PM Shehbaz emphasised how severely these disasters have affected the country, reinforcing the need for fairer international support and cooperation.
Describing climate change, poverty, and inequality as issues that transcend national borders, the prime minister called for collective international action rooted in shared responsibility. He also emphasized the importance of fair access to advanced technologies, including digital innovations, without discrimination.
He called for investment in connectivity projects, not merely as trade routes but as bridges fostering dialogue, exchange of ideas, and shared prosperity.
