Lasting peace only possible by reining in terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil: PM Shehbaz tells Kabul

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged Afghan government to rein in the terrorist, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), using Afghan territory as a base, stressing that curbing such groups is vital for lasting regional peace.

He said this while addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Islamabad on Tuesday.
Discussing regional stability, the prime minister said that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is essential for enhancing regional connectivity, growth, and prosperity.

PM Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s vision of a peaceful neighbourhood but voiced concern over militant networks that continue to threaten peace within Afghanistan and across its borders.

Referring to last month’s attacks on Pakistani border posts, he said Pakistan’s decisive response served as a powerful reminder to those who challenge its security.

He urged the Afghan authorities to realize that enduring peace can only be achieved by reining in the TTP and other terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil.

PM Shehbaz Tuesday called on the international community to join hands in advancing global peace, fostering sustainable development, and reinforcing collective security.

He expressed confidence that united efforts by nations could create a world built on the pillars of stability and shared prosperity.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering belief in achieving peace through dialogue and diplomacy, noting that lasting peace and security form the foundation for any nation’s sustainable progress.

He remarked that the real worth of peace is often realized in times of conflict, when humanity faces the harsh consequences of war and instability.

Pakistan, he said, has experienced such trials both directly and indirectly but has never wavered from its commitment to maintaining calm and harmony.

PM Shehbaz recalled that Pakistan recently faced unprovoked aggression from its eastern border in May.

He lauded the country’s armed forces for their exceptional professionalism and readiness, saying their swift and effective land and air operations not only foiled the enemy’s plans but also demonstrated to the world Pakistan’s unshakable resolve to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We may have won the war,” he said, “but our next goal must be to secure peace through sincerity and genuine effort.”

PM Shehbaz also shed light on the government’s reform initiatives aimed at inclusive growth, institutional strengthening, and the empowerment of youth and women.

He said Pakistan is closely working with global financial institutions and development partners to drive fiscal reforms, promote climate resilience, and create a conducive environment for investment.

“No country can prosper in isolation,” he emphasized, “our futures are deeply interconnected, and Pakistan remains committed to international cooperation and multilateralism.”

PM Shehbaz added that parliaments have a vital responsibility to improve people’s lives through legislation and public representation.

Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gillani, addressing the conference, stressed that parliaments must serve as guiding lights for societies.

He underlined the importance of collective thinking, commitment, and parliamentary diplomacy as tools for building cooperation among nations.

Gillani also highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change, urging parliamentary leaders to craft policies that account for its complex nature and ensure that national security is rooted in fairness and human development.
