PM Shehbaz, Qatari counterpart discuss evolving regional situation

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday held a telephone discussion with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, during which both leaders exchanged detailed views on the changing regional landscape and reiterated their shared commitment to ongoing peace and stability efforts.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the two sides reviewed the current status of peace initiatives in progress and emphasised that all stakeholders must remain constructively engaged to help ensure meaningful progress.

The statement added that PM Shehbaz expressed Pakistan’s gratitude for Qatar’s consistent and firm support for Pakistan’s diplomatic and peace-oriented efforts, describing the relationship between the two countries as deeply fraternal.

During the conversation, the prime minister also conveyed his respectful regards to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and expressed anticipation for his upcoming visit to Pakistan. He noted that the visit would contribute significantly to strengthening and expanding the long-standing bilateral partnership between Islamabad and Doha.

Later, in a post shared on X, PM Shehbaz outlined the details of his call, stating that the Qatari premier had reaffirmed a joint commitment to supporting all ongoing initiatives aimed at fostering lasting peace, regional stability, and constructive diplomatic dialogue.

Separately, the Qatari prime minister also posted on X, saying that the conversation covered bilateral relations and explored avenues to further enhance cooperation between the two countries. He added that they also discussed the latest regional developments along with Pakistan’s mediation efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

He expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s diplomatic role and acknowledged the contribution of mediation efforts by various parties that helped facilitate a ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

The Qatri premier further reiterated Qatar’s full backing for Pakistan’s efforts to resolve regional issues through peaceful dialogue, stressing that all sides should respond positively to such initiatives in order to create an environment conducive to negotiations and long-term peace.

This latest exchange followed a previous phone call between the two leaders last week, in which they also discussed the regional situation and reaffirmed their intention to support ongoing peace efforts through continued coordination.

These diplomatic contacts come amid heightened regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States (US), Israel, and Iran, with prospects for fresh negotiations remaining uncertain.

Amid these evolving circumstances, Pakistan has continued to advocate for restraint and dialogue, and has been viewed as playing a constructive role in encouraging mediation efforts aimed at de-escalation and supporting the broader push toward a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution.
