Protest held in Spain against possible Afghan Taliban delegation visit to Brussels

Madrid (Web Desk): A protest was held outside the European Parliament office in Spain in response to reports about a possible visit by a delegation of the Afghan Taliban to Brussels.

The protest brought together human rights groups, Members of the European Parliament, and Afghan nationals, all of whom expressed opposition to the proposed engagement with Taliban representatives, according to Afghan media outlet Afghanistan International.

Participants in the protest argued that over the past five years the Taliban have effectively turned Afghanistan into what they described as an “open prison” for women and girls.

They maintained that the group’s policies continue to seriously undermine the rights, safety, dignity, and future prospects of Afghan women and girls.

The demonstrators further contended that inviting Taliban officials to European institutions would amount to overlooking the suffering endured by Afghan women and would be deeply disrespectful to those affected by Taliban rule.

They also stressed that the Taliban should not be given a platform within the European Parliament and instead called for them to be held accountable through international judicial mechanisms.
