PM Shehbaz says govt does not believe in using NAB for political vendetta

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed that his government has no intention of turning the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) into a tool for political victimization, stressing that the institution functions independently and carries out its responsibilities with full transparency.

Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad marking International Anti-Corruption Day, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to strengthening coordinated efforts aimed at rooting out financial misconduct.

He noted that this year’s global observance focuses on the theme “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” explaining that it reflects the critical role young Pakistanis must play in building a fair and accountable future.

PM Shehbaz described the country’s youth as its true wealth and a key source of long-term stability, prosperity, and progress.

The prime minister emphasized that national advancement, economic resilience, and public confidence depend on a society free from corruption.

He added that ensuring transparency in government processes — whether financial, administrative, or institutional — remains one of his administration’s top priorities.

PM Shehbaz also praised NAB Chairman Lieutenant General (Retired) Nazir Ahmed and his team for their determined work and notable successes in tackling financial crimes.

Speaking on the occasion, the NAB chief, highlighted that the bureau recovered over Rs5.1 trillion in assets this year.

He said major reforms introduced since 2022 have significantly boosted the bureau’s overall performance.

The officers who made exceptional contributions to NAB’s achievements were awarded honorary shields.

PM Shehbaz also directed that top-performing officers should also receive cash rewards or be provided the chance to perform Umrah.

A representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) later delivered a message on behalf of the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs Dr. Felipe Paullier.
