International Anti-Corruption Day being observed today

Islamabad (Web Desk): International Anti-Corruption Day is being observed today (Tuesday) across the globe including Pakistan.

The theme of the Day this year is, “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow's Integrity”

The day is observed annually on December 9 since the passage of the United Nations (UN) Convention Against Corruption October on 31, 2003 to raise public awareness for anti-corruption.

Corruption is a societal scourge that undermines the very foundations of communities. Until effective measures are taken, progress, justice, and public trust cannot be secured.

A concerning trend in recent times is the normalization of corrupt practices: bribery is often seen as a right, and adulteration and fraud are treated as legitimate business strategies, contributing to the erosion of social and ethical values.

Eradicating corruption in Pakistan requires embracing the principles of honesty, public service, and transparency.

By instilling these values in institutions and society at large, the nation can realistically aim to eliminate corrupt practices.

Equally important is restoring public confidence and addressing the growing sense of disillusionment, ensuring the rule of law is strengthened and trusted by all citizens.

On the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day on Tuesday, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed their dedication to promoting integrity, transparent governance, and continuing efforts to eliminate corruption from the country.

The president and the premier emphasized that fighting corruption is not the task of the government alone but a collective responsibility that also involves civil society, the media, and ordinary citizens.

President Zardari called on public servants, professionals, and citizens to strengthen their commitment to honesty, stressing that upholding integrity is crucial for reinforcing Pakistan’s institutions and advancing stability and progress across the nation.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that taking decisive action against financial corruption is among the government’s highest priorities.

He pointed out that the National Accountability Bureau, together with other relevant authorities, is actively working to ensure accountability and transparency at every level.
