WHO issues alert for 12 countries over hantavirus spread fears

Geneva  (Web Desk): The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an alert for 12 countries amid concerns over the possible spread of hantavirus, triggering global concern.

According to international media reports, cases of hantavirus have been linked to a cruise ship, where some passengers had already travelled to different countries before showing symptoms, increasing the risk of wider transmission.

The WHO confirmed that 5 cases have been identified, while a total of 8 individuals have shown symptoms of severe respiratory illness. Affected countries include Türkiye, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and several others.

The health agency said monitoring of passengers and their close contacts is ongoing, warning that further cases cannot be ruled out if timely measures are not taken.

Health experts describe hantavirus as a dangerous viral disease usually transmitted to humans through exposure to rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. The virus can enter the body through inhalation of contaminated particles.

Symptoms include high fever, severe fatigue, muscle pain, headache, nausea, cough, and in some cases difficulty in breathing, which can develop into serious lung complications.

Experts say there is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for the virus, but early medical care can reduce risks. Preventive measures include maintaining hygiene, avoiding rodent exposure, and taking protective precautions in contaminated areas.
