Karachi (Staff Report): first death anniversary of renowned philanthropist and social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi is being observed today.
Edhi suffered primarily from kidney problems, among other diseases including diabetes. He passed away on July 8, 2016, at the age of 88. His funeral was attended by hundreds of people in Karachi’s National Stadium.
Following the celebrated philanthropist’s death, the state and Sindh government had announced one- and three-day mourning periods, respectively. The federal government also posthumously awarded Nishan-e-Imtiaz to Edhi.
By the time of his death, Edhi was registered as a parent or guardian of nearly 20,000 children.
Edhi was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize, including by Malala Yousafzai. Edhi received several awards including Gandhi Peace Award and the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize.
