CDF Field Marshal Asim Munir receives guard of honour at GHQ ceremony

Rawalpindi (Web Desk): The Pakistan Army General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi hosted a distinguished guard of honour ceremony to recognize Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who holds the dual responsibilities of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

During the proceedings, contingents from the Pakistan Army, Navy, and Air Force rendered a formal guard of honour to the CDF.

The ceremony saw the presence of senior military leadership, including Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu of the Air Force, Admiral Naveed Ashraf of the Navy, and high-ranking officers from all branches of the armed forces.

The Ministry of Defence had officially confirmed Field Marshal Munir’s appointment as CDF on December, following President Asif Ali Zardari’s approval the day before, given on the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Having been promoted to Field Marshal earlier this year, Munir will continue to serve concurrently as Chief of Army Staff for a five-year term.

His promotion to Field Marshal — only the second in Pakistan’s history and the first in over 60 years — came in the wake of the nation’s decisive victory over India in the May war.

The creation of the CDF position is tied to President Zardari’s endorsement on November 15 of the Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy (Amendment) Bills 2025, following their parliamentary approval.

According to the updated Article 243, the powers and responsibilities accorded to a Field Marshal now extend to any General elevated to that rank.
