Pakistan rejects India's 'baseless assertions' regarding Jammu and Kashmir status

Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan on Monday categorically rejected India’s assertions regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir, terming them baseless and contrary to internationally recognised facts.

“India’s unilateral actions and continued illegal occupation cannot alter the internationally recognised disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir,” Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said in a statement.

He pointed out that the Kashmir dispute continued to be among the longest-running unresolved issues before the United Nations Security Council.

Khan said that the relevant United Nations (UN) resolutions clearly provide that the future status of Jammu and Kashmir is to be determined in accordance with these resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people through a free and impartial plebiscite held under UN supervision.

The FO spokesperson further stated that the official maps issued by the UN, which identify Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory, continued to reflect its legally recognised position.

“India’s so-called official maps and unilateral claims of sovereignty have no bearing on the status of the disputed territory,” he remarked.

Sajjad Haider Khan also called upon the international community to take steps to ensure an immediate end to human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

The FO spokesperson also urged the international community to ensure that India immediately stops human rights violations in the IIOJK, and fulfils its commitment towards the realisation of the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people, in line with the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
