Lahore (Web Desk): Former President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar passed away in Lahore on Monday after prolonged illness. He was 92.
In a post on Twitter, his grandson Attaullah Tarar wrote, "My grandfather Mohammad Rafiq Tarar has passed away."
Tarar had served as the president of the country for around two and a half years.
He had taken the oath as the head of the state on Jan 1, 1998 and remained in the office till June 20, 2001.
Muhammad Rafiq Tarar was nominated for the president's office by then prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
Before joining politics from the platform of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Tarar served as a judge of the Supreme Court (SC) from January 17, 1991 to November 1, 1994.
Prior to it, he also served as chief justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC) from March 6, 1989 to October 31, 1991.
PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and others have expressed condolence over the demise of Rafiq Tarar.
President Dr Arif Alvi also expressed grief over R Tarar's death and offered prayers for the departed soul and extended condolences to the family.
