Death anniversary of renowned singer Munawar Sultana observed

Lahore (Web Desk): The 31st death anniversary of legendary Pakistani singer Munawar Sultana is being observed today (Sunday), paying tribute to one of the pioneering voices of the country's early music and film industry.

Born in 1925 in Ludhiana, Munawar Sultana moved to Lahore with her family after the partition of the subcontinent.

She received professional musical training from renowned Radio Pakistan composer Abdul Haq Qureshi, popularly known as Shami, which helped shape her distinguished singing career.

Munawar Sultana achieved a unique milestone by becoming the playback singer for Pakistan’s first feature film, Teri Yaad.

She also immortalized her voice through the famous patriotic anthem Chand Roshan Chamakta Sitara Rahe, which was recorded at Radio Pakistan Lahore and remains cherished by audiences to this day.

Following the creation of Pakistan, she became one of the most sought-after playback singers in the film industry and contributed to numerous successful productions.

Her notable film credits included Pheyray, Mehbooba, Anokhi Dastan, Beqarar, Do Ansoo, Sarfarosh, Akeli, Naveli, Mahboob, Jalan, Intiqam, Bedari, Masoom, and Lakht-e-Jigar. During the 1950s, she was widely recognized as one of the leading female voices in Pakistani cinema.

She later married Ayub Romani, who served as the Station Director of Radio Pakistan Lahore. After her marriage, Munawar Sultana chose to step away from the entertainment industry and largely withdrew from musical activities.

On this day in 1995, Munawar Sultana passed away in Lahore.
