Spain edged past Portugal 1-0 in a fiercely contested encounter, with Mikel Merino scoring the decisive goal in the 90th minute to seal his side's place in the last eight.
The defeat also marked the end of Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup journey. Playing what is expected to be the final World Cup of his illustrious career, the Portuguese star was visibly emotional after the final whistle and left the pitch in tears.
In the other Round of 16 fixture, Belgium produced a dominant display to defeat the United States 4-1 and advance to the quarter-finals.
