NDMA alerts residents, tourists to landslide danger in northern areas

Islamabad (Web Desk): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a landslide alert for several areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, warning that continuous rainfall could trigger landslides and road blockages between July 7 and 9, particularly along the JSR/Skardu-Rondu Road.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), the prevailing weather conditions are consistent with the authority's earlier forecast. Ongoing rains and soil erosion in the northern regions have significantly increased the risk of landslides, rockfalls, and debris flows at various locations.

The alert warns that Skardu and its surrounding areas, including Buromdo Nala, Chamcho, Malupa, Dumbodas, Tormik, and the Haramosh section, are likely to experience localized landslides over the next two days.

The NDMA said erosion along streams, mudslides, and falling rocks could make travel on mountain roads particularly hazardous, raising the possibility of temporary road closures and disruptions.

The authority stated that the NEOC is continuously monitoring the evolving situation, carrying out risk assessments, and sharing timely information with relevant departments to ensure an effective response to any emergency.

Provincial and local administrations, rescue agencies, and other concerned departments have been directed to remain on high alert, maintain emergency preparedness, and ensure swift response arrangements in case of any incident.

The NDMA has also urged residents, tourists, and travellers to avoid unnecessary travel in mountainous areas and on routes vulnerable to landslides.

Those planning to travel have been advised to exercise extreme caution, stay away from unstable slopes, and check the latest weather forecasts and road conditions before starting their journey.

The authority further recommended that the public use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App to receive verified updates, weather advisories, and safety guidelines.
