UNSC condemns 'heinous, cowardly' Swat bombing

New York (Web Desk): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has strongly condemned the suicide bombing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat District killed, calling it a “heinous and cowardly” terrorist attack that killed at least 16 people and injured dozens more.

In a statement, the 15-member council described the attack as a brutal and cowardly act of terrorism and called for those behind it to be swiftly identified and brought to justice.

The blast struck a police station in Kabal area of Swat, and was claimed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Members of the UNSC expressed their profound sympathy to the families of those killed, as well as to Pakistan’s government and people. They also extended their wishes for a rapid and complete recovery to everyone wounded in the attack.

The council stressed that all those involved in carrying out, organizing, financing or supporting such terrorist acts must face accountability and legal proceedings.

It also called on countries around the world to cooperate fully with Pakistan, in accordance with their obligations under international law and applicable Security Council resolutions, to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The UNSC reiterated its longstanding position that terrorism cannot be justified under any circumstances, irrespective of the motive behind an attack, the place or time where it occurs, or the individuals responsible for it.

The council members further reaffirmed the obligation of all states to take every possible measure to counter terrorist threats that endanger international peace and security.
