Pakistan defeat Japan to qualify for FIH Hockey World Cup after 8 years

Cairo (Web Desk): Pakistan has booked their place in the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 by defeating Japan 4–3 in a dramatic semi-final of the qualifiers on Friday, marking their return to the tournament for the first time since 2022.

The Green Shirts started the match strongly, with captain Ammad Butt giving Pakistan an early lead in the ninth minute with a brilliant field goal. The advantage held until Japan equalized in the 21st minute through Ryoma Ooka.

Japan seized momentum in the third quarter as Shota Yamada and Koji Yamasaki scored in quick succession, taking the lead 3–1.

However, Pakistan staged a remarkable fightback in the final quarter. Abu Mahmood, Sufyan Khan, and Afraz struck in the 52nd, 55th, and 57th minutes respectively, turning the match on its head and reclaiming the lead.

Despite Japan pushing hard in the closing minutes, Pakistan’s defense held firm, sealing a memorable victory.

This triumph also marked Pakistan’s fourth consecutive win in the qualifiers, finishing the group stage unbeaten.

Their campaign began with a narrow 5–4 win over China, fueled by a brace from Rana Waheed, followed by a 5–3 victory against Malaysia and a 4–2 win over Austria, with Abu Mahmood scoring twice.

Pakistan will now face England in the final of the qualifying tournament on Saturday at the same venue.
