New Delhi (Web Desk): An Indian student was arrested in the southern state of Tamil Nadu for calling India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) “fascist”.
Lois Sofia, a native of Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, currently a research scholar in Canada, was remanded to judicial custody for 15 days after she raised slogans against the BJP Government in the presence of the party’s state President Tamilisai Soundararajan.
The incident took place in a plan which landed at the Tuticorin airport where both Sofia and Soundararajan were bound for the southern district from Chennai.
Sofia, who was accompanied by her father, had shouted “Away with the Fascist BJP Government,” inside the aircraft after the plane had landed.
BJP politician Tamilisai Soundararajan then filed a police complaint against the girl.
Tamilisai claimed that Sofia, a student from the University of Montreal in Canada, shouted slogans against the BJP government inside the aircraft.
The police had registered an FIR under two sections of the TN Police Act and the Indian Penal Code for causing a public nuisance. She was produced before a judge, who remanded to 15 days of judicial custody.
