Islamabad (Web Desk/Agencies): Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani highlighted Pakistan's initiatives aimed at achieving resilience and a sustainable future during the opening session of the 27th Sustainable Development Conference, organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI). He urged continuous efforts, increased awareness, and innovative strategies to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Gilani pointed out the pivotal role of technology, emphasizing the potential of artificial intelligence and blockchain to enhance social protection and promote inclusive growth. He stressed the need to foster a culture of responsible citizenship and environmental stewardship to advance sustainable practices.

He commended the Sustainability Investment Expo 2024, held in conjunction with the conference, as a valuable opportunity to showcase innovative technologies and encourage collaboration and investment.

The conference theme, "From Fragility to Resilience: Enhancing Sustainable Development," served as a vital reminder of the necessity to turn vulnerabilities into strengths through creativity and adaptability.

Speaking to an audience of government officials, academics, environmental experts, and researchers, Gilani noted that Pakistan, as one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, faces pressing challenges that require urgent discussions about survival and prosperity.

He acknowledged the progress made in climate governance and sustainable development, highlighting the national policy that addresses resilience, poverty alleviation, social equity, women's empowerment, and efficient management of agriculture, water, and energy resources.

Gilani also mentioned that Pakistan's Vision 2025 is closely linked to the SDGs, reinforcing the country’s commitment to achieving meaningful development outcomes for the well-being of its citizens.

The 5Es Framework developed by the Planning Ministry outlines strategies focusing on exports, e-governance, environmental issues, energy, and equity.

Gilani recognized the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) for providing essential financial aid to millions of vulnerable families, while additional economic reforms are being implemented to alleviate poverty and support inclusive growth.

He said that Pakistan's parliament is the first in the country to transition to solar energy and has established climate change committees in both houses to incorporate the SDGs into the national development agenda.

The acting president called for dedicated efforts to tackle poverty, address gender inequality, and ensure access to education, healthcare, clean drinking water, and infrastructure development, alongside environmental conservation.

He emphasized that advancing women's empowerment through education and leadership is crucial, framing gender equality not only as a moral duty but also as a fundamental driver of sustainable development.
