Russia seeks closer ties with Pakistan under SCO framework, FM Lavrov tells SAPM Fatemi

Moscow (Web Desk): Russia has reiterated its strong interest in enhancing its relationship with Pakistan within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), particularly focusing on collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts.

This was highlighted during a meeting held in Moscow between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Syed Tariq Fatemi, Pakistan’s Special Assistant to the Prime Minister.

Fatemi conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to expanding bilateral cooperation with Russia across multiple sectors such as energy, connectivity, and trade.

During the discussions, Tariq Fatemi provided a detailed update on recent developments in South Asia, expressing Pakistan’s concerns about escalating tensions in the region.

He specifically underscored the serious consequences of India’s threat to disrupt the flow of waters by placing the Indus Waters Treaty on hold.

In response, the Russian Foreign Minister voiced his country’s support for the normalization of relations between India and Pakistan, highlighting that improved ties would have a positive impact on regional stability.

Regarding bilateral relations between Pakistan and Russia, Lavrov expressed satisfaction with the consistent growth in cooperation, emphasizing significant initiatives like the establishment of new steel mills and connectivity projects.

In a further diplomatic gesture, Syed Tariq Fatemi presented a letter from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Russian President Vladimir Putin, underscoring the importance Pakistan places on its partnership with Russia.
