At least 80 of 216 prisoners escaped from Karachi's Malir Jail recaptured: police authorities

Karachi (Web Desk): A large scale search operation is underway as Karachi’s Malir district witnessed a dramatic and alarming incident on Monday night after a powerful earthquake struck the region.

Amid the chaos caused by the tremors, 216 inmates managed to escape from Malir Jail after breaching the prison walls.

Taking advantage of the confusion and emergency procedures, a large number of prisoners turned aggressive.

They overpowered the on-duty security personnel, forcibly seized their weapons, and opened indiscriminate fire.

This violent confrontation led to the death of one inmate and injuries to five others. Additionally, three Frontier Corps (FC) personnel and two police officers sustained injuries during the incident.

Authorities confirmed that during the initial earthquake response, inmates were temporarily moved out of their barracks as a safety measure. In that vulnerable moment, some prisoners incited violence and triggered a full-scale escape attempt.

According to police estimates, between 500 and 600 prisoners tried to flee the facility, with more than 200 managing to successfully break out.

Law enforcement agencies responded swiftly. Police, Rangers, and FC forces cordoned off the surrounding area and launched an intensive search operation.

According to police authorities, so far, more than 80 of the escaped inmates have been rearrested, while nine additional individuals suspected of aiding the escape have been taken into custody.

The situation prompted an immediate and coordinated response from both the provincial government and security forces.

Sindh’s Minister for Prisons, Ali Hassan Zardari, took immediate notice of the jailbreak. He summoned a detailed report from the Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General of Prisons and issued clear instructions to seal off all routes around Malir Jail.

He vowed that all escaped inmates would be brought back into custody and that any officer found guilty of negligence or poor handling of the situation would face strict disciplinary action.
Sindh’s Interior Minister, Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, also visited the prison shortly after the incident.

The directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir to initiate urgent operations, emphasizing intelligence-based efforts to track and recover the escapees.

The Director General of Rangers Sindh, Major General Muhammad Shamraiz, arrived at the jail to assess the situation on the ground and received a comprehensive briefing from the jail authorities.

Injured personnel were quickly evacuated from the site and transported to a private hospital by Chhipa ambulance services. In the aftermath, security across Karachi has been tightened.

All police units have been placed on high alert, and additional security patrols have been deployed. 
Reinforcements from the Rangers, police, and FC have been stationed both inside and outside the jail to stabilize the situation.

As per thew police authorities, the ongoing operation to recapture the fugitives will continue until every escaped prisoner is accounted for.

The law enforcers reiterated their commitment to restoring order and ensuring that such a security lapse does not recur.
