Gilgit (Web Desk): Khunjerab Pass between Pakistan and China is being reopened for all kinds of traffic today (Monday) after almost three years.
This was confirmed by Home Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan, Rana Muhammad Saleem Afzal in a statement in Gilgit, the Radio Pakistan reported.
The major trade route between the two countries was closed in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
The closure of Khunjerab border for three years caused financial issues for local business community and a large number of workers were left jobless.
According to protocol signed between Pakistan and China, trade between the two countries through the Khunjerab pass begins on April 1 and the pass is closed on November 30 every year.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday expressed his pleasure over the reopening of Khunjerab Pass and said that it would help increase bilateral trade between Pakistan and China.
As per a press release by Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Media Wing, the premier termed the occasion a welcome one for boosting trade with ‘Iron brother China’, said in a press release.
"The reopening of the Pass has removed a hurdle that will further expedite pace of work on China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)," PM Shehbaz said, adding that restoration of the trade route between the two countries, after a span of three years, is a matter of huge rejoice.
The prime minister said that the journey which had started way back in November 2019, had recommenced in the year 2023 and expressed his resolve to move ahead on CPEC with dual speed in comparison to 2018.
PM Shehbaz added that affection and cooperation from the Chinese leadership for the people of Pakistan were unforgettable.
He also appreciated the relevant authorities of the two countries and the team members over the restoration of trade and travel facility.
