Belgium to recognise Palestine as state, announces to impose sanctions on Israel

Oslo (Web Desk): Belgium has officially decided to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot announced that this formal declaration will be presented at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meeting later this month.

On social media, Prévot revealed that Belgium is imposing 12 stringent national sanctions against Israel. These measures include a ban on importing products originating from illegal Israeli settlements, a review of government contracts with Israeli companies, and restrictions on Israeli flights and transit.

The Foreign Minister explained that these steps are taken in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Israel’s violations of international laws. He emphasized that the sanctions are not aimed at the Israeli populace but rather intended to pressure the Israeli government to comply with international regulations.

With this move, Belgium joins France, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada as one of the countries formally recognizing Palestine as a state. The announcement is expected to be officially made during the UN General Assembly session this month.
