Paris (Web Desk): A recent study conducted by researchers at Toulouse University in France has uncovered alarming evidence about the extent of microplastic pollution in the air we breathe. The study found that an average person inhales approximately 68,000 tiny microplastic particles every day. These particles range in size from 1 to 10 micrometers in diameter.
The research team collected and analyzed air samples from various indoor environments, including apartments and cars. Their findings revealed that indoor air contained around 528 microplastic particles per cubic meter, while the air inside vehicles contained significantly higher concentrations, approximately 2,238 particles per cubic meter.
What is even more concerning is that these figures are about 100 times greater than what previous studies had estimated. The study also highlighted that, in addition to these tiny particles, individuals inhale roughly 3,200 larger microplastic particles daily, ranging from 10 to 300 micrometers in size.
Experts warn that the inhalation of microplastics could pose serious health risks. These particles have the potential to penetrate deep into the lungs, enter the bloodstream, and even reach the brain. Continuous exposure and accumulation of microplastics in the body might lead to inflammation, disruption of hormone functions, and in severe cases, damage to vital organs.
The scientists behind the study stressed the urgent need for more extensive research to fully understand the long-term effects of microplastic exposure on human health and to develop strategies to minimize this growing risk.
