Veteran Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Gilani remembered on 5th martyrdom anniversary

Islamabad (Web Desk): Kashmiris living on both sides of the Line of Control(LoC), as well as those settled around the world, are marking the fifth death anniversary of veteran Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani today.

According to the Kashmir Media Service, Syed Ali Gilani died on September 1, 2021, at his home in Srinagar. He had spent more than a decade under continuous house arrest by Indian authorities before his death.

Throughout his political and public life, Gilani remained a prominent advocate for the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He consistently called for the Kashmir dispute to be resolved in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have also paid tribute to the late Kashmiri leader on the fifth anniversary of his death.

In separate messages, both leaders described Syed Ali Gilani’s life as a symbol of courage, dignity and unwavering determination, saying his principles would continue to inspire future generations pursuing justice and freedom.

They said Gilani’s decades-long struggle and personal sacrifices, despite difficult circumstances and what they described as continued state repression in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), helped keep the Kashmir issue alive among the Kashmiri people.
