International Labour Day being observed today

Islamabad (Web Desk): International Labour Day is being observed today (Friday) around the world, including in Pakistan, to recognize the immense role and sacrifices of workers while highlighting the importance of protecting labour rights and preventing exploitation.

International Labour Day is observed every year across the globe to pay tribute to workers in Chicago who were killed by police during demonstrations demanding an eight-hour working day in 1886.

The day is being observed as a public holiday, with rallies, gatherings, and seminars taking place in different parts of the country to highlight the importance of workers’ rights and welfare.

Pakistan introduced its first labour policy in 1972, officially recognising May 1 as a national holiday. 
The policy also paved the way for several welfare initiatives, including the establishment of the Social Security Network, Old Age Benefit Schemes, and the Workers Welfare Fund.

Marking International Labour Day, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged all segments of society, particularly industrialists and the business sector, to play their role in safeguarding the rights and respect of workers across the country.

In separate statements issued on the occasion, both leaders highlighted that countries which value and protect their labour force secure a stronger future for coming generations. They noted that empowering workers is key to sustainable national development and prosperity.

President Asif Ali Zardari stated that Pakistan is dedicated to upholding global labour principles and ensuring basic rights for workers, including decent wages, social security, an end to forced and child labour, and equal treatment without discrimination.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the Pakistani workforce, whether serving within the country or abroad, demonstrates the nation’s talent, commitment and professional competence.

He added that institutions such as the Employees' Old-Age Benefits Institution and the Workers Welfare Fund are continuing their efforts to support labourers and their families through pensions, housing schemes, educational opportunities and various other basic facilities.
