ECP issues schedule for presidential election

Islamabad (Web Desk): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday issued the schedule and notice for the presidential election, which will be held on March 9.

“In pursuance of the provisions contained in paragraphs 1 and 3 of the Second Schedule of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 read with clauses (3) and (4) of Article 41 of the Constitution, Public Notification for election to the office of the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is hereby issued and in relation thereto the following programme for receipt of nomination papers, scrutiny of nomination papers, withdrawal of candidature, publication of list of validly nominated candidates, retirement and the polling day,” the ECP stated.

According to schedule issued by the ECP, candidates can submit their nomination papers to the presiding Oofficers in Islamabad and with the presiding officers at four provincial capitals by 12pm on March 2.

The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on March 4 and the candidates can withdraw their nomination papers till March 5, while final list of the aspiring candidates will be published on same day.

As per the ECP notification, the candidates can withdraw their names by March 6.

The polling for the next president will be held on March 9 at the National Assembly and all the provincial assemblies from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Earlier on Wednesday, the ECP appointed five presiding officers to conduct election for the office of President of Pakistan, in Islamabad and four provincial capitals.

According to an ECP spokesperson, these officers will receive nomination papers from candidates and chair meetings of the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) at Parliament House, Islamabad, and the provincial assembly of the respective province during the scheduled polling for the presidential election.

As per the notification, Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) will oversee the elections in the Senate and National Assembly in Islamabad.

A member of the Election Commission-I, Election Commission of Pakistan, will supervise polling in the Provincial Assembly of Punjab in Lahore. The Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court (SHC) will supervise the presidential elections in the provincial assembly of Sindh in Karachi.

Similarly, the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) will supervise the polls in the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in Peshawar.

Moreover, the Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) will conduct the presidential polls in the provincial assembly in Quetta.
