New York (Web Desk): World Cities Day is being observed today (Friday) across the globe, including Pakistan, to draw international attention to the growing trends of urbanization, the challenges that come with it, and the vision of creating sustainable urban environments.
This year’s theme, “People-Centered Smart Cities,” emphasizes building urban spaces that prioritize citizens’ needs while embracing innovation and technology to improve quality of life.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed World Cities Day in December 2013 through Resolution 68/239, aiming to promote global cooperation on urban challenges and to inspire new approaches to urban planning and management.
The first observance took place in 2014, following major international initiatives such as the Shanghai Expo 2010, themed “Better City, Better Life,” and the 2016 Habitat III Conference in Quito, which introduced the New Urban Agenda.
Since its inception, the day has evolved into an important global platform for exchanging ideas, sharing best practices, and spreading awareness about the need to make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable—objectives that align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 11.
More than half of the global population now resides in urban areas, a figure projected to reach nearly 70 percent by 2050.
Cities today stand as engines of economic growth and innovation, yet they are simultaneously under increasing strain due to housing shortages, inadequate infrastructure, climate change, and deepening social inequality.
World Cities Day encourages governments, local authorities, and citizens to work together in finding fair and lasting solutions to these issues. Around the world, the day is observed through conferences, exhibitions, and community activities that promote improved urban management and sustainable innovation.
For countries like Pakistan, where urbanization continues to accelerate, the observance provides an opportunity to highlight both the prospects and the challenges of city expansion.
It brings attention to the need for better infrastructure, control of unplanned urban growth, solutions for informal settlements, and strategies to strengthen resilience against climate threats.
