Hate speech case: Court grants bail to Captain (retd) Safdar

Lahore (Web Desk): A Lahore sessions court on Wednesday granted bail to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar in a case pertaining to hate speech against government and country’s institutions.

Safdar's lawyer Farhad Ali Shah had filed the bail plea, contending that his client was subjected to political revenge.

Additional sessions judge Tajamal Shehzad announced the verdict and granted bail to the PML-N leader.

The court also asked Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar to submit a surety bond of Rs200,000.

On October 21, police arrested PML-N leader and son-in-law of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif Captain (retd) Safdar on a hate speech charge.

According to party leaders, Safdar was taken into custody by police near Ravi Toll Plaza when he was on his way from Bhera to Lahore.

Police said a case was lodged against the PML-N leader under Section 124A after October 11 for hate-speech against state institutions.

On October 12, a Lahore sessions court approved Safdar’s interim bail till October 26 in a case regarding interference in public matters and misbehavior with the police.
