Lahore (Web Desk): Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stated on Saturday that the Punjab government is conducting the largest rescue and relief operation in the province’s history to assist flood-affected citizens.
In a detailed briefing to the media, Aurangzeb shared the official figures, revealing that 30 lives have been lost and 2,038 villages across Punjab have been submerged by floodwaters from the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers, affecting more than 1.5 million people. She further mentioned that over 481,000 individuals have been successfully relocated to safer areas. Specifically, 1,169 villages were affected by the River Chenab, 462 by the Ravi, and 391 by the Sutlej.
Aurangzeb highlighted the ongoing relief efforts, mentioning that 511 relief camps and 351 medical camps are operational 24/7, providing shelter and support to over 6,373 individuals. In addition, over 405,000 livestock have been rescued, with specialized treatment being provided at 321 veterinary camps.
To ensure prompt evacuations, she confirmed that the number of boats deployed for rescue missions has now increased to 808. This surge in resources has enabled the safe evacuation of 68,477 individuals in just 36 hours.
The senior minister praised the leadership of Chief Minister, who is personally overseeing the entire operation. She emphasized that all resources have been mobilized, with provincial ministers, assembly members, district administrations, Rescue 1122, police, civil defense, and other relevant agencies working together as a unified team. This coordinated approach is a response to the most severe floods Punjab has experienced in decades.
She also acknowledged the growing threat posed by climate change, calling it a serious disaster that requires the urgent implementation of advanced early warning systems. In her comments, she assured that once recovery efforts are completed, the government will launch a comprehensive anti-encroachment drive, alongside a long-term strategy aimed at minimizing future flood risks.
In conclusion, Aurangzeb praised the dedication and bravery of the rescue workers, calling them “our heroes,” and reassured that rehabilitation and compensation for the victims of the floods remain a top priority for the provincial government.
