Helsinki (Web Desk): Finland has announced that it will be closing its embassies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar by 2026, citing "operational and strategic reasons." The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs issued a press release on Friday confirming the closures.
The statement explained that the decision was driven by changes in the political situations in these countries, as well as their limited commercial and economic ties with Finland. "The embassies in Islamabad, Kabul, and Yangon will be closed for operational and strategic reasons," the release stated. "Decisions on closures are made by a decree of the President of the Republic."
The ministry confirmed that preparations for closing the embassies have already begun, with the closures planned for 2026.
The closures are part of Finland's broader "strategic review" of its diplomatic missions. The review takes into account Finland’s foreign and security policy interests, as well as its export promotion goals. The aim, according to the Finnish government, is to concentrate resources on countries that are more strategically important to Finland.
"We will systematically develop Finland’s network of missions abroad to meet future challenges," said Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen. "Our operating environment is changing rapidly. The changes we are making will help us build a stronger, more competitive Finland and manage Finland’s external relations in line with our priorities."
Finland previously closed its mission in Pakistan in 2012 due to budgetary constraints, but reopened the embassy in 2022. In 2023, Sweden also closed its embassy in Islamabad indefinitely, citing security concerns.
