Lahore (Web Desk): The 39th death anniversary of renowned classical singer Ustad Chhote Ghulam Ali Khan was observed on Monday, as admirers and members of the music fraternity reflected on his lasting influence on the region’s classical music tradition.
Born in 1910 in Kasur into a household steeped in music, he went on to carve out a distinguished place for himself in the cultural history of South Asia.
His introduction to music came at an early age under the guidance of his father, Mian Imam Bakhsh, who was well known for his distinctive approach to singing. Showing exceptional promise, Ustad Chhote Ghulam Ali Khan later honed his skills under respected masters Ustad Chhajju Khan and Ustad Mian Buddhay Khan Beenkar, the latter being a disciple of the Delhi-based Qawwal Bacha tradition.
Gifted with remarkable versatility, he excelled in a wide range of classical forms including khayal, tarana, thumri, dadra and ghazal, earning recognition while still young. His performances drew large audiences across undivided India, with his voice resonating in cultural centres such as Amritsar, Lahore, Delhi, Banaras, Calcutta and Bombay.
From the earliest days of radio in the Subcontinent, he became a regular presence on the airwaves and was widely celebrated as one of the most captivating performers of his time, commanding attention at major music gatherings and concerts.
Over the years, he developed a strong association with the Lahore Arts Council, where he devoted himself to training the next generation of singers. Among those who benefited from his mentorship were Shahida Parveen, Badr-uz-Zaman and Qamar-uz-Zaman.
His dedication and artistic excellence were formally acknowledged in 1985 when the Government of Pakistan conferred upon him the Presidential Pride of Performance award
Ustad Chhote Ghulam Ali Khan passed away on December 24, 1986, leaving behind a rich and enduring musical legacy. He was laid to rest at the Miani Sahib graveyard in Lahore.
