Lahore (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Monday inaugurated the "Kisan Card" programme in Hafizabad, aimed at empowering farmers by diminishing the role of intermediaries in the agricultural sector.

This programme is intended to provide direct support to farmers, enhancing their livelihoods.
During a ceremony, attended by prominent members of the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N), including Rana Sanaullah and Maryam Aurangzeb, the Kisan Cards were distributed to local farmers.

Maryam highlighted that this initiative was initially conceived by her father, former premier Nawaz Sharif, who was unable to participate due to international commitments.

She reaffirmed the government’s dedication to creating policies that prioritize the interests of farmers, especially in the face of rising wheat prices.

"We have been criticized for our timing on wheat procurement, but our primary concern is ensuring that farmers maintain their profit margins," she noted.

In addition to the Kisan Card programme, Maryam announced the forthcoming "Green Tractor Scheme," which has already received 1.5 million applications.

This scheme will provide subsidies of up to Rs1 million for tractors valued at around Rs4 million, making them more affordable for farmers.

Moreover, the government plans to invest between Rs10-15 billion to establish machinery hubs in each tehsil, facilitating easier access to agricultural equipment at lower rates.

To help reduce energy costs, Maryam also shared plans to convert tube wells currently reliant on diesel and petrol to solar power, with an initial goal of transitioning 7,000 units.

This shift is expected to significantly decrease electricity expenses for farmers, enhancing their overall productivity.
