CJP-led full court meeting convened to discuss measures to reduce case backlog

Islamabad (Web Desk): A full court meeting of the Supreme Court (SC), chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, held on Monday.

According to reports, the meeting was attended by all the judges including Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah who joined via video link.

The main objective of the gathering was to review the court's performance regarding the handling and resolution of cases, with a focus on strategies to tackle the backlog and improve judicial efficiency.

The SC registrar presented a detailed report on the current caseload, indicating that there are 59,191 cases awaiting resolution.

She introduced a newly formulated one-month plan, based on the Case Management Plan 2023 designed by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, which aims to set clear benchmarks and leverage technology for better case management across all categories.

During the discussion on the Case Management Plan, judges shared insights and strategies to help achieve its goals.

They designated specific benches of two and three judges to handle criminal and civil cases, ensuring quicker resolutions.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, participating via video link, contributed further suggestions to alleviate the backlog and enhance procedural efficiency, proposing initial actions for one month, followed by plans spanning three and six months.

CJP Afridi thanked all judges for their dedication to implementing the case management plan in its entirety and achieving the outlined objectives.

The effectiveness of these initiatives will be reviewed at the next full court meeting, scheduled for December 2, 2024.
