Mumbai (Web Desk): The Indian Supreme Court on Tuesday once again dismissed a petition to ban the upcoming Bollywood film Padmavati, observing that "those holding public offices should not comment on such issues".

According to Indian media, the court observed that it is the prerogative of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to review the film and decide whether it can be screened, according to reports in the Indian media.

"When the matter is pending the consideration of the CBFC, how can persons holding public offices comment on whether CBFC should issue certificate or not? That will prejudice the decision of the CBFC," the judges said.

The film has been battling controversy from the outset, with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and lead star Deepika Padukone facing threats and having bounties announced for their heads.

Rajput groups and politicians have accused Bhansali of distorting history in his portrayal of the Rajput queen.

The chief ministers of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have said they will block the film's release even if CBFC clears it.

It is still unclear when the film, earlier scheduled to be released on December 1, will be released.
