Islamabad (Web Desk): The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has suspended the licenses of five Long Distance and International (LDI) companies for failing to clear their outstanding dues, ordering an immediate halt to their operations.
The companies whose licenses have been suspended include WorldCall, Wateen Telecom, Wise Communication, TeleCard, and Circle Net. PTA had previously given these firms a one-month deadline to settle their outstanding payments, but they failed to comply, prompting regulatory action.
In addition, PTA has directed all cellular mobile operators and class value-added service providers to immediately cease providing telecommunication services to the suspended companies.
According to official figures, the dues against the companies are substantial. Wateen Telecom owes Rs. 6.25 billion, Circle Net owes Rs. 5.90 billion, WorldCall owes Rs. 5.69 billion, TeleCard owes Rs. 4.07 billion, Multinet owes Rs. 1.41 billion, while Redtone has the highest outstanding amount at Rs. 14.31 billion.
PTA conducted individual hearings for each company but reported no progress in terms of dues clearance or license renewals.
In total, the companies owe approximately Rs. 24 billion in principal and Rs. 56 billion in late payment surcharges. Among the 13 LDI operators in the country, four had their licenses renewed in 2024, seven saw their licenses expire the same year, and two still have valid licenses until 2025 and 2026 respectively.
PTA also noted that the Universal Service Fund’s Access Promotion Contributions (APC) have remained unpaid by these companies for several years. The regulatory authority initiated the action based on directives from the Ministry of IT and relevant court rulings.
