Shaoshan, Hunan, (Web Desk): President Asif Ali Zardari paid a visit on Tuesday to Shaoshan, the hometown of Chairman Mao Zedong, where he placed a wreath at the monument of the Chinese revolutionary leader at Statue Square as a mark of respect.
The president was received by Li Jiyang, a senior representative of the Xiangtan People’s Congress, along with Zhang Xihui, who heads the Shaoshan Administration Bureau in Hunan Province. He was also briefed in detail about Mao Zedong’s life, focusing particularly on his formative years in Shaoshan and the experiences that influenced his political thinking.
Officials also informed the president about the significance of memorial institutions in safeguarding historical records and helping the public better understand China’s revolutionary journey.
After the wreath-laying ceremony, President Zardari visited the Mao Zedong Memorial Museum, where he received a comprehensive overview of Mao’s life, ideology, and lasting political impact as the founder of the People’s Republic of China. He reviewed historical artefacts, archival documents, and displays that trace major phases of China’s revolutionary struggle.
The president commended Mao Zedong’s role in reshaping China’s history and recognised his contributions toward national unity, resistance, and progress.
He observed that preserving such historic locations offers valuable understanding of the forces behind modern China’s evolution and highlighted the importance of remembering history for a nation’s development.
President Zardari was accompanied, among others, by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, Ali Hassan Brohi, Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister of Sindh for Investment and Public-Private Partnership Projects, the Chief Secretary of Sindh, China’s Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong, and Pakistan’s envoy to China Khalil Hashmi.
