Islamabad (Web Desk): At the United Nations, Pakistan has called for an immediate halt to the ongoing violence in Sudan and stressed the need to revive a Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led political process.
The appeal was made by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during a statement at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Sudan.
He strongly condemned attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces against civilians and civilian infrastructure, warning of an imminent risk of large-scale atrocities.
The ambassador urged the Rapid Support Forces to avoid further escalation and to fully comply with international humanitarian law.
He also expressed concern over the increasing use of drones and advanced weaponry, noting that it is leading to higher civilian casualties, disrupting humanitarian operations, and increasing the risk of broader escalation.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s principled stance, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar emphasized that Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions must be preserved.
He stated that there can be no military solution to the conflict, adding that peace and stability in Sudan are closely linked to security in the wider African and Arab regions.
The ambassador stressed that restoring stability in Sudan should be treated as a collective international responsibility.
He reiterated Pakistan’s continued support for the United Nations, regional partners, and other stakeholders working to end the conflict and help Sudan return to peace and constitutional order.
