New York (Web Desk): In response to the recent border clashes and escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk have shared their concerns and called for calm.
Secretary-General Guterres urged both countries to fully adhere to their obligations under international law, particularly international human rights regulations. He emphasized that caution is essential in maintaining peace and stability along the border.
Meanwhile, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk stressed the importance of mutual dialogue to resolve disputes. He stated that in the wake of cross-border skirmishes and aerial attacks, only constructive communication between Pakistan and Afghanistan can help de-escalate the situation.
The tensions escalated after Pakistan targeted Taliban defensive positions in Kabul, Paktia, and Kandahar in response to unprovoked actions by Afghan Taliban forces.
The operation reportedly resulted in the deaths of 133 Taliban fighters and left over 200 injured. The Afghan Taliban claimed retaliatory operations against Pakistani security forces following Pakistan’s cross-border strikes.
UN officials reiterated that diplomacy, adherence to international law, and dialogue remain the most effective means of preventing further escalation and ensuring regional stability.
