New York (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong support for multilateral cooperation, while highlighting the United Nations’ significant contribution to promoting peace, stability and sustainable development across the world.
He made these remarks while meeting UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
During the discussion, the prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the goals and principles outlined in the UN Charter.
PM Shehbaz also commended António Guterres for his leadership and recognised his consistent efforts to uphold the principles of the UN Charter in the organisation’s work for the betterment and well-being of humanity.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on several key regional and international developments, with the changing situation in the Middle East receiving particular attention.
PM Shehbaz stressed that continued dialogue and diplomatic efforts were crucial to resolving tensions in the region.
He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s willingness to play a constructive role in supporting peace and stability.
PM Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s backing for the Palestinian people’s right to determine their own future and establish an independent state.
He also highlighted the increasing spread of Islamophobia, especially in Pakistan’s neighbouring region, and called for meaningful international action to address and contain the phenomenon.
The two sides also discussed developments in Afghanistan, particularly the significant increase in terrorism emanating from Afghan territory.
In response, UN Secretary-General António Guterres recognised Pakistan’s active role and strong presence at the United Nations, along with its contributions to international peace and security.
Guterres also expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts aimed at achieving peaceful settlements to regional disputes and ensuring lasting stability, while acknowledging the country’s role and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
