Islamabad (Web Desk): A video of a 60-year-old man from Rawalpindi marrying a young woman has gone viral in Pakistan over the past three days, sparking widespread debate on social media.
Initially, many users criticized the elderly man, with some blaming him and others suggesting that the young bride married only for financial reasons.
The man, however, defended his marriage, describing it as a “love marriage”. He stated that love came first, followed by the Nikah (Islamic marriage), blending both arranged and love marriage elements. He added that his wife consented out of love, and as she was divorced, he followed Islamic principles in marrying her. “The heart should be young, age doesn’t matter. I did not commit any wrongdoing,” he said, responding to negative comments online.
His wife also defended the union, saying that when love comes from the heart, age is irrelevant, and once someone is truly liked, there should be no delay in marriage.
Some social media users later praised the couple, noting that the man chose Nikah over illicit relationships, making marriage a proper and acceptable choice.
However, after new videos of the couple were circulated, criticism resurfaced. One user wrote, “At this age, making such videos—where is the dignity? Marriage is fine, but these ridiculous videos do not suit elderly people.” Another added, “This nation will never reform; showing such acts publicly at this age shows no sense of modesty or shame.”
The debate reflects a growing divide on social media between those who defend personal choice and those who question the appropriateness of the couple’s public displays.
